I managed to fix this problem by switching out video cards; same model but different manufacturer. So I went from an ASUS gtx 660 to an EVGA gtx 660 I had lying around. After installing the drivers for the new card everything worked fine and I was able to play for 4 hours without any crashes. However, the first card doesn't actually seem faulty as it works completely fine with any other game. So I think this may be a driver issue; I didn't know that cards that are the same model but different manufacturers have unique drivers. If you have an extra card, I would suggest switching it out and trying that or maybe roll back drivers to an older version (although that didn't work for me with the first card).
This is more a work around than a fix and not everyone is gonna have an extra card to use but until a concrete fix is implemented for these crashes we're having it might be an option for some.
