Might need to rethink your party if your struggling on the explorer difficulty honestly. Even playing solo on Classic, with no companions at all I was able to kill 4 enemies. When me and my two friends played it together we killed all of them and Gareth jumped on to Dallis ship to go fight her because there was no one left.
Are you level 7/8?
EDIT: Didnt even know the ballistas could be fired lol
