I have completed the ritual and found myself standing in that desert. I didn't finish all quests or explore the three areas ahead though. Can I do this later or will it be too easy or is it impossible?

If you want to complete any previous quests, you will have to re-load. Becoming the Divine One is a one-way trip to the wastelands.
