I found this quest disappointing because I can't imagine what motivation most characters would have completing this quest through the traditional route. I mean, why would you be helping the magisters at this point in the game?
I finally went back to an earlier save, persuaded the cook I would keep her secret, and then killed Carver. I had hoped this might lead to an alternative completion when speaking with the cook again, but it looks like it will just eventually close.
