I just got the game, and ive heard how much a crappy build can hamstring you.

Ideally I would be going Fane or custom undead, and I wanted to know if a full Necro build is viable, or if it isnt what pairs well with Necro for a caster build.

Pets are okay, but I dont want to be focused 100% on them while I hide in the corner.

Thanks!

After you get off the initial starting area, you can reset all stats and skills as many times as you want to for free - so you're never useless or screwed over by a bad build. Necro is quite strong - it's like a summoner/geomancer style with some party tricks and instead of armor you get life steal. The Bone Spider summon does 2x the damage of the summoner one, but it has no MR and is easily CC'd, but overall it's fairly strong in most fights.

Thank you!

Would full Necro be okay, or would it be best to hybrid a bit into Summoning or Geo or Pyro or something for the best bang for my casting buck?

Im playing on Tactician just by the by.

If you haven't played this game before, I highly suggest doing classical. Tactician is not....a good time investment, bc they have not balanced it and is very poor. Would not recommend until it is changed.

As for what to pair, if you want to go the mage route, you can pair with Geomancer. With Geo you get Poison dart, which you can use on yourself for heal since you're going undead. Geo gets poison, slows and physical armor buffs, so its pretty good to spec into, even if you're gonna make one of your other companions a dedicated caster. The other caster can just spec into Hydro and that will take care of your magic armor stuff.

Just keep in mind most Necro damage skills scale off of INT so it's best to combine them with casting abilities for the increased damage output and yea if you're an Undead Necro then Geo is your go to for healing. Also Warfare isn't a terrible choice because it'll increase the Physical Damage of your spells as well, but STR is unnecessary.

Necro + Geo + Summoning + Warfare down the line would be my suggestion. You don't have to fully invest in Summoning or Warfare to get some use out of them. They'll just be improving your Necro abilities.
