Armour appearance is very weird all in all. In the character creation you get some quite neat looks that are not a good representation on how you will play that game at all. And while playing a few things don't make much sense.
Class looks that make no sense:
- Battle Mage, Enchanter = can only get that look in Fort Joy, after that I have seen any drops and merchants stop selling it
- Wayfarer (pants), Inquisitor, Lohse (pants) = alternative leather armour that I haven't seen in the game
- Wayfarer (top), Lohse (top) = weak cloth type armor, that no one would ever use
- Metamorph = Class skill scale with strength, but uses a spear which scales with finesse
- Conjuror = Uses shield which requires constitution, chain armour which requires finesse and a wand that requires intelligence. No idea what a finesse based armour is actually doing there.
Things that bother me about armour appearance in game:
- Alternative leather armour seems to be unavailable
- Chain armour scales with finesse, but has a bulky fighter look
- Tribal themed mage armour is not available after Fort Joy
- Normal cloth clothing is completely useless, due to have low/no armour points
Now maybe some of these can be fixed by crafting? But I haven't seen more then very basic armour crafting so far. And even if there is some way to craft some good armour with the appearance you want, since level scaling is so very important I doubt you can keep up with your preferred look for any significant part of the game.
/edit
Well then... it seems the "leather" armor in the character creator was the 3rd mage armor......
So yes nice.. finesse gets bulky leather and bulky chain.. and intelligence gets a much better leather armor.
