Hey folks,
-----------------------------------------------
***SPOILERS***, obviously
-----------------------------------------------
what do you think about the elemental/status puzzles in the game?
I really like having them, but I find them a bit too specific for the information provided, sometimes.
The burning archivist is a good puzzle IMO, the hint with how Braccus would douse flames is nice (blood), and since he suffers from cursed fire it's somewhat logical that bless needs to figure in the equation. It's a bit weird that bless + blood or blood + bless doesn't work but apparently only blessed blood, but okay, I can still get that.
Then the elf elemental puzzle, which seems pretty straightforward (winter: ice, spring: blood, summer: fire, autumn: lightning), but then turns out to be exceedingly specific. Why is it not enough to set the tree on fire? I forgot to try lizard's breath and maybe a few other things, but... fire arrows? nope. fire grenades? nope. Burning daggers? nope. Various fire combos? nope. The Laser pyro spell was the only one that worked for me. Why?
The various 'curing' puzzles. I still haven't found a solution to the compulsively lying rat in the dungeon. Is there even supposed to be one? 'A shocking touch of magic would most definitely not instantly remedy the situation', he says (more or less). Every lightning spell, arrow or grenade I tried just killed him. Bless, heal etc. obviously failed as well. It seems a bit like a lottery to me, there is too little information to go on -- or did I miss a hint somewhere? Or... maybe it was a double negation? Should I have used earth spells?
Same with the sick chicken in Driftwood. I now have it in my quest log and absolutely no freaking idea how to solve it. I suspect the magic cockerel has something to do with it but talking yielded no further clues. Again, anything I tried to cure its disease first yielded a -5 attitude reaction and then death. If it's some special plot-related disease, then wouldn't it be helpful to mark it as such, and not to let the player use spells specifically designed to cure 'diseases' (a spell that has a distinct lack of qualifier in its description)? Wouldn't a healer recognise that a specific disease is unknown to him/her and point that out?
And finally, I remember that sick dude on the beach in Fort Joy. This is more of a quest scripting issue but I still do think that curing and healing him via healing spell(s) should have stopped the scripted death from kicking his bucket (his status is gone and his health bar is full, after all). Or again, marking it as a special uncurable disease would have been less frustrating.
Anyway. What do you think?
