Yup, humans are the worst. I have two elves and two humans in my party and the humans are always quite ashamed by their bad look. They overcompensate by mocking the elves for showing naked skin, althought they actually liked to do the same.
The only innovative human armor is the low level tribal mage stuff. Never saw it again after Act 1 however. Ok-ish is the heavy Knight-like armor (until you get to the higher level ridiculously stupid small helmet). Except that it is fat-and-stuffy for humans.
