They're not any hostile if you're using brain and not fighting everything that moves... you can talk with them from the beginning of entering Blackpits and they are neutral so you freely going to the highest spot where the guy hangs and THEN starting fight.
(and yes, you can save the whole family from the magisters and still neutral speaking with the magisters who are near Gwydam).
I just solo'd that, i am playing solo Lone Wolf Shadowblade Fane and i won that fight at first attempt (not first attempt of playing this game, since i played full 4 man team Sebille avatar before, but my game got so bugged i had to start from the beginning...)
