Greetings, all!

1: Can in-game stolen gear be sold again to vendors? If so, what are the restrictions?

2: How picky are NPCs from which our group steals in confiscating stolen goods that weren't stolen from them?

3: Do stolen items and gold stack with non-stolen items and gold in our inventories?

4: What happens a party member tries to steal from a being from which they've already stolen?

5: How worthwhile is it to recruit mercenaries/hirelings, spec them for stealing, then dismiss them?

As far as I know:

1. Yes, no problem if your group was searched by the victim prior without success. You can even sell it back to the victim.

2. Very picky. If they find anything stolen from anybody during a search (not during bartering), you have to go to prison, fight or bribe. I'm not sure wether there is a persuasion possibility. I reload if such things happen.

2. I don't know exactly. No groblem at least after transferring stolen gold from your thief to the bartering char. I only steal gold (ok, I stole some skillbooks with lvl 4). With Thievery 8 I got 14,800 per steal, or so.

4. You can only pickpocket once per char and NPC, luckily.

5. Sounds great, if you like cheesy and unnecessary gameplay to get advantages. I have Thievery on one char and stole at lvl 4, 10 and 17 from some merchants. It works fine without overdoing stealing, if you have Lucky Charm (on Tactician).

Stolen items don't stack with normal items because they have the stolen tag.

Item stacking is anyway still a core issue of the game, because there are many things which look the same but don't stack.

This system is a mess. In my game the npcs keep finding stolen items in my gear and I have checked it three times and there are no stolen items in there. I am currently in a reload cycle trying to figure this stuff out and systematically remove everything from all three characters that are being searched to find out what causes this. If they had to make the npcs omniscient and discover everything about your items in a glance they should at least make it easy to figure out which items they discover. And what is up with the "stolen" tag, anyway? I know that I have stolen gold before yet I only have one big giant cache of gold in my inventory without the tag. My guess is that the stolen tag items somehow stacked with the untagged items removing the visual tag but still being detected by the npcs. I can't explain this any other way.

IIRC I stole a Skillbook I already owned.
Those 2 (stolen and not stolen) stacked, and the stolen tag was removed.

Can't say if it isn't just displayed anymore, or if the tag is complete removen from the item/database.

Haven't tried it with other items.

Check it again. Steal and let one character at a time be searched.

I had the same problem and checked my bags many times, to no avail, then later by chance I recognized a damn needle with the stolen tag I had overlooked in any check.
