Same here: it's why I like Fraps, it just leaves all its screenies in your My Pictures directory for your later perusal. I think the free version only does bmp but there's all manner of conversion programs out there to shift them to a more useful format.
I only mention Fraps as it's familiar and I've used it for years: I have no association with it, I just don't like change.
