On the left hand you see your team and any status they have and if you move the cursor over the status you can see what it does. With the enemy if you move the cursor over them (or portrait) you can see what status they have but how can you see what those status does ? Some of them are obvious like smoothing cold but frequently they will have other weird effects that are not so obvious. Examine can do this but it is not nearly as expediant as just moving the cursor over the effect...

Right-click and Examine enemies and a little window pops up showing their stats, and you can see what the status effect does by hovering over the icon there.

EDIT: Oh, you know about Examine. Well your title suggested you did not. Examine does the job well enough.
