I presume the blade you got is the singing blade, quite good I might add. If you can't reach the manuscript either try to get as close as you can and aim to put it in your inv, or use a telekenisis spell if you haven't already learnt it. This will enable you to get the manuscript and a hidden spell book in this sewer. If all else fails you can just go straight back to the merchant in the centre talking or reload and fight in an open space to get it again.
