Mages are generally more powerful than giant chickens. Don't trust level-differences.
Is everyone decked out in level appropriate gear? Are you using your characters to their full potential? Yes? Then come back in a level or two. There is nothing forcing you to take that fight if you are getting your shit handed to you.
