Hmm did you try Raze's advice in an other topic:

Can you right click on the executable / shortcut, select compatibility mode and set it to Windows 98? I don't know if that will help (probably not); maybe someone with XP can post if they ran into problem in the demo or not.

Might help cause warcraft 2 isn't that old

I liked MM7 better. In MM6 I never had money. It seemed like I always had 5 levels that I couldn't train for lack of cash. MM8 was the exact opposite. MM7 seemed like the perfect balance. Oh, my favorite was MM4 & 5 combined to make Worlds of Xeen. MM3 was also very good. MM9 sucked. Just my 2 cents.

I see alot of people put planescape as the best, well its a great rpg no doubt its not the best. What i look for in a great rpg is will i want to play this again when im done??The answer with planescape is no.Its way to story driven for me to want to sit through all that text more then one time.

Morrowind is far and away the greatest rpg ever made and how you could even argue against it is beyond me.Ive put in about 400 hours worth of game time with it, and i havent seen it all yet.To me that open endness is what makes an rpg great.I would even put NWN ahead of planescape just for the sheer amount of charecter abilities it has.

Whether you loved or hated morrowind you cant deny the magnitude that this game really is.Beleive me im not bashing planescape i enjoyed it to just not a 2nd time through.

"Morrowind is far and away the greatest rpg ever made and how you could even argue against it is beyond me." lbane

hello lbane, welcome to the forum.

well sorry to burst your bubbles but i disagree. morrowind may boast of magnitude in scale & breadth of whatever it wants to claim but i was bored to death within an hour in the game. it's so unexciting (but then can everyone find walking exciting?) & there's no drive (call me lazy) to all the quests.

i'd like it isometric, more toned down in scope & breadth so that focus is better, & not to forget fun. yeah, i find that lacking in your coveted morrowind.

oh well, to each his/her own. i'm more of a dude. & u can call SW: KOTOR over-simplified but i call it fun.

Here's an argument for you: quantity does not equal quality.

I know a lot of people, myself included, who don't even want to finish Morrowind, let alone replay it. Oh, it's big and free, but so what? The wilderness is huge -- and what is in it? Tons and tons of plants, wild animals, and identical egg mines and ancestral tombs and smugglers' caves. Countless of NPCs? Oh yes, but is there even one of them that sticks out? Memorable? None. I can count on one hand the number of NPCs in Morrowind with unique dialogue. Personality is, apparently, quite out of question. The quests are many, but most of them consist of either: escort person X from A to B, kill Z to get Y, deliver C to D. Yawn. Repetitive beyond words. The map and journal are also quite awful -- and no, I'm so not going to buy the expansion packs to see if this is improved any. The main story? Seems to be advanced just via FedEx quests. Maybe there's more to it, but I quickly lost interest and never got far into the main plot -- that's how uninspiring it is. Give me actual substance any time -- like witty dialogue, interesting quests, and meaningful interactions with NPCs.

As far as I'm concerned, open-ended gameplay is waaaay overrated. Yes, I'll go back to the restrictive PS:T, KotOR, and other "linear" RPGs, thank you. They, at least, held my interest for more than thirty minutes and contain characters that I actually give a tinker's dam about.

You admitted yourself you havent gotten far in the main plot.Kinda like judging a book by its cover if you ask me.Finish the game then whine about how much it sucked.Atleast i can say i played through Planescape..Like ive said im not bashing it but just because a game has 1000's of pages text dont mean its the best by a long shot.By the way i remember planescape having many, many fedex quests itself.

It is??? i suppose if you like playstation 2 rpg,s it would be as such.Open endness and charecter development is what seperates the pcrpg, and console rpg,s apart. This is why console rpg,s are looked at as inferior to pcrpg,s.Like ive said before im not bashing it but imo its not the best.Maybe top 10 but to much diolougue is a drawback planescape.I dont mind reading text but the average player dont want to sit there and talk to 1 npc for 20 minutes. All that is,is a coverup for how short the game really is.

If I'd wanted to suffer lifeless dialogue, joyless characters, and dead writing, I wouldn't be playing a RPG. I would be hitting myself on the head, repeatedly, with a blunt object.

No, your bashing PS:T or not is not in question. It is, rather, your head-hit-wall attitude of "Morrowind is the best game EVAH! How can anyone contradict me?"

PS:T had original themes, excellent dialogue, and unique NPCs to go with those FedEx quests. Morrowind does not.

I'm a literary masochist -- I can boast of finishing various awful books -- but asking me to finish a monster like Morrowind is a rather tall order. Suffice to say that I played it long enough to judge its NPCs, dialogue, the gameplay, and the overall atmosphere -- something that doesn't require finishing the whole thing. Well, at least the water was rather pretty to look at. Am not interested in putting myself through further neural pain.

W00T! CRPG elitism! I just ranted about it in another post and here it crops up again. Which just goes to show how common a mindset it is.

Seriously, what gives you the idea that CRPGs are superior to console RPGs? Judging by individual products -- say, FFVII as opposed to PS:T -- I'll admit that the contents of PS:T are a lot more mature than FFVII's. Why does freedom, for some odd reason, equate to greater quality? Does freedom in a RPG somehow require better mental prowess, or better use of the higher brain functions that I don't know of? I simply don't understand why the CRPG genre attracts so many elitist pseudo-intellectuals. Does it say, somewhere, that you need to have a certain IQ to appreciate a RPG? Quite frankly, I find CRPGs to be the type of games that require least skill. No hand-eye coordination needed, no logical thinking needed for solving puzzles (ala adventure games), no strategic thinking most of the time (ala RTS). CRPGers simply have some patience, a favor for micro-management, and usually, desire for a good story. Oh, and some literacy. (Although the sheer amount of not-quite-coherent sentences and questionable English of certain people do put me in doubt sometimes.)

What seperates the much-maligned "console RPGs" from the elitist-attracting, CRPG is simply a difference in sub-genre. You wouldn't be asking for a complex story in Minesweeper, or open-ended gameplay in Tetris, would you?

As I said, I appreciate good writing. Without the dialogue and such, characters would not have been developed; the story would have had less meaning and impact. You want stats-development and the ability to wander as much and gather as much loot as you want? Fine, but that's not my cup of tea. There's no substance in such freedom, nothing to hold the gameplay together. Morrowind is, to me, just an electronic simulation of hiking the countryside.

I told you before finish the game then whine if you feel you must. You canott just barley dip in to the main storyline of a game this big and give me an educated opinion about it.

No, your bashing PS:T or not is not in question. It is, rather, your head-hit-wall attitude of "Morrowind is the best game EVAH! How can anyone contradict me?"

Is there a problem with feeling confident in what you feel is the highest quality rpg out there??

Im hoping your joking here, but if you want me to really tell you ok here it goes.RPG=Role playing game and console rpg,s are very limited in charechter development and side quests.Lets take FF 7 for instance i loved the game to death one of my favorite. However you can play through it over and over, and all your charecters are going to end up pretty much the same.

Theres no choice of classes to be and very little in the way of side quests its straight forward, but yes still fun.I should say though from the true deffinition of roleplaying i can say with confidence ,that FF 7 even know labeled a roleplaying game is not one.Atleast not by what the definition of roleplaying really is.

I do not remember one time in final fantasy where any major decision in the game could be altered at all.Im not saying, just looking at it game to game that pcrpg,s are superior, what im saying is true roleplaying will not be found on the console nearly as much as on the pc.It takes the overall package imo, to be a roleplaying game not just a good storyline.

Morrowind was a waste of my money....the game is totally boring....a game should captivate you from the very first moment you start....Morrowind just didn't....i just bought dungeon siege: Legends of Aranna......and in my opinion it's alot less boring......but that's just my opinion right?....you say that, i say this....it's kinda done with that....and just to say so....Morrowind doesn't even stand in my top 10 of rpg's.....

Aha, if I disagree with you, it's "whining", is it?

No, I adamantly refuse to spend another minute playing Morrowind. It's simply that dull, that tedious, and totally unfun. Besides, you should know jolly well that you can explore approximately 80% of the game without ever going near the main storyline. I didn't go that far, but what I have seen is enough. If the game fails to engage my interest, then I see no reason to torture myself by trodging through it to the bitter end. I did that once with D2, and I still want those wasted hours of my life back.

Quote

None at all. Problems occur when you try to force your opinion on someone else, or refuse to acknowledge that -- gasp! Shock! Horror! -- people are going to disagree with you. And they have every right to. No, I'm sorry, but your opinion is not the One True Opinion(TM).

Really. Who made your president of the RPG club? Did someone come up with an RPG bible, with the commandments that everyone must follow? Weird. No one gave me a memo.

If you want to do "real" role-playing, get a live DM. CRPGs, such as they are at the moment, cannot simulate that level of flexibility. In fact, it's a safe bet to say that none of the currently available CRPGs is a "true" RPG. Oh, it's true that I don't think FFVII is much of an RPG -- more like adventure with RPG elements. But if someone wants to call it an RPG, why not? Go ahead. I just am not going to share that view.

I've come to accept that the definition of "RPG" has changed over time, and not everyone will share my definition of it. Hence, I'm not going to go around preaching, "But this isn't true RPG! You suck! I'm right! You are wrong! Shut up!"
