no your ridiculous. all games give you the chance to become someone else in a fantasy or non-fantasy environment so therefore playing a role of someone else.

srry but your quite wrong there.....have you ever roleplayed?? if something is to be called roleplaying there must be a story you can play...and playing soccer is not really a story and neither is bass fishing.....

I have done a lot of reading, and I see there is not one strictly definition for RPG, is it table top, PC or console. different people see it differently. The whole thing is even more complicated as developers while being in the process of creating better games start to mix genres.

And as for the games with separate endings I can recall only two.
Deus Ex and PST. In both games there was no difference, how you play, what allingment you have, all these different endings were coming from choosing different approaches in the final scene of the game only.

Here is some reading for you folks.

What dont you get???A game like tombraider is NOT role playing.Geez im looking at the back of the box and it says action/adventure.Just because you play as a different person it is not a roleplaying game for the last time.Im talking about games that closley resemble table top like NWN/Baldersgate ect.Im sorry but tombraider does not resemble table top roleplaying..

To be roleplaying the game has to give you decisions that you the player decides on his own, during the course of the game, and im sorry to say tombraider does not let you do that.Your way of thinking why couldnt a soccer game be considered a roleplaying game??your playing the role as a soccer team right??Make up your mind because now your posts are becoming sensless

it's how u see it, not how u play it that makes whatever game RPG. i mean when u play a soccer manager game, can u opt to play as a spectator or a hooligan or a player? nope. as for tomb raider, u are playing the role as that extra pixels on her chest woman, not as her dad, butler, enemy, etc.

the only thing that's u is choice & implementations.

that's by understanding the root words of RPG, not as how game developers make it to be.

my 1 cent.

How about this: Is it role playing if you have no choice in how things should be done?

In Tomb Raider, you must find the key that opens the door that hides the lever that opens the exit. Sure, you can take the passage on the left or the passage on the right to get there, but ultimately, you are solving a strict puzzle. There is no other way to do it. And any optional extras along the way mean little in the grand scheme of things. So you get a few extra bullets or a new gun. No-one cares two days later that you just robbed a gun store.

In Deus Ex, while there is one ultimate goal, there is usually numerous ways to complete it, assuming you want to. Combat, stealth, street-smarts, underworld connection, and hacking all provide an answer to each puzzle. You have options! And in each case, the results of your actions have lasting effects. In Deus Ex 2, you can kill people or knock them unconsious. I have a moral objection at killing anyone unnecessarily, even though they're just polygons. So when I was asked to assassinate a lawyer, I really had to think twice about it. After killing him for my cheap reward, I discovered he played a key role later in the game.

What's your opinion on that?

I know it's spelt wrong. Why spoil a good joke with a technicality! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

And perhaps Orks are different to Orcs. In the Lone Wolf series they were called Giaks.

I don't know what art is but I know what I like.
I don't know what an RPG is but I know what I like. I like D2. It has been debated in many forums whether or not D2 is a true RPG. I don't care. Many RPGs have been modeled after D2 one way or another.
Now one of the major draws of D2 is the ability to customize your character based on skill and attribute selection. And there are very distinct character types. Several games which are referred to as RPGs have this type of setup even though they might be lacking in the quest department. That is fine with me because I like to hack and slash with the ability to customize my character more than I like playing the role of step 'n fetch it.
So for me an action oriented game with distinct customizable character types is an RPG. And if it isn't an RPG according to some folks because it doesn't have a strong story line with quests and multiparty dialogue that can spin the yarn in 7 different ways I don't care as long as I have fun.
I like DD. I like the hack and slash in it. I wish the character trees and skill systems were more improved, but it is a great game in spite of some quests such as the ones in Stormfist castle.

A game with strong story and fairly customizable character, but not action-oriented, is not a RPG, then?

*hides among the debris of thrown pop bottles and soda cans*

So....we have to opposing views to this whole mess...
on the far left wing we have those that believe that all games are rpg or Role-Playing Games Vs. The Far right who believe that there are only certain games that are rpgs.

Roleplaying....playing out a role
RPG aka role-playing game.....a genre of video game that is classifed according to its certain qualities persay..

*bashs starwars and all things holy*

And people call Starwars an rpg....its nothing but trash and garbage!
The only true RPG's are magic and sword fighting in a cool medieval fantasy world!!

I know you're just baiting people, but I'll play the devil's advocate: so... everything that is set in a medieval fantasy world, with swordsplay and magic, a RPG, right? What about, say, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, a game that's clearly labeled as a beat-em-up? What about Enclave, another beat-em-up (but on PC)? And the Warcraft games -- which, prior to WCIII, don't even have the RPG elements of XP and leveling up? What 'bout, say, Age of Empire?

I think we can manage an agreement if we say that traditionally an RPG consists of

- a role you play
- experience points
- upleveling (what a word !)
- a certain rule set
- character creation / changing (meaning upleveling)

Would you agree to that - with the word traditionally explicitely given ?

Of course it is an RPG--but not an RPG I like!
