This is for the intermission between A1 and A2.

I passed the persuasion check with his guard to let me into the cage, and all the "search his body" dialogue options with Alexander when he's sleeping do nothing. Pickpocketing him only show he's carrying a health potion. Killing and looting him also does nothing, nor does bumping up my wits to 21 and going through the dialogue tree again. I have reloaded from before the persuasion check and failed it purposely, killing the Magister guard to see if that changed anything.

Also, the living door on the left only tells me I have to enter from the other side, while the door on the right requires the gem (I already know the password). In addition, the other options to interact with the right-side door do nothing, so these are both dead ends without the gem.

I don't know what happened here, as this is my third full playthrough and I don't remember being stuck here like this, but for some reason I just never came across the strange gem this time.

I also had a save on Fort Joy that I reloaded to, and still had the same issue once I got back on the ship.

I believe I am soft-locked here, because I cannot loot the strange gem from Alexander, and that means I cannot enter the living doors (they cannot be lockpicked). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I vaguely remember you can actually open the door on the left without the gem. Via a dialog option, I think. Or maybe it's possible to lockpick it. Because I'm pretty sure in my playthrough I managed to open that one first.

I thought I did something similar to that, but at least in this playthrough, the left door only says "no entry allowed! yada yada!" and there is no other option than to end the dialogue. Both living doors have the "this lock cannot be picked" property as well.

Welp. Could be that they patched it. And it just occurred to me that it's possible that the character inspecting Alexandar needs decent Wits to pass.

EDIT: Actually, that's not it. I just reloaded a save and did it with 10 Wits.

But the dialog option specifically says "you take the gem from him". If this option shows up and does nothing then it's a bug. If it doesn't show up in the first place, then it's still possible that there's more to this.

Hey, thank you for testing it out yourself. I feel like I'm losing my mind here as if I'm missing something super obvious. :hihi: The only options when inspecting Alexander are to look at 1) his face, 2) his hands, and 3) his robes, each of which just presents a narrated line with no option to get the gem. Even loading the game from the final fight area on Fort Joy gives me the same issue, so whatever it is, it's already occurred before I leave Act 1. Perhaps I'll try to re-install if by some very unlikely chance that helps.

There is another (I'm assuming) unrelated bug here, where if you talk to the Magister from outside the locked cage door, sometimes the door magically unlocks and opens automatically. I have no idea if the state of the door has anything to do with the spawning of the Strange Gem. Also, the cage guard mentions she dropped the key somewhere, and I've never found it on any of my playthroughs (I assume it's to encourage you to get in via teleporting or lockpicking), if it exists at all.

If I'm still up the creek after the re-install, I'll try to get some video footage of it to submit to Larian. The only game mod I play with is the Sprint mod, and as far as I can tell there isn't any documentation of that causing any sort of issue like this one.

I tried pickpocketing him in the same savegame, and the gem did show up in his inventory. I also tried lockpicking the gate, teleporting passed it - the gem showed up normally in both cases.

I said there might be more to it because somehow I was thinking it's not required to get the gem and open the talking doors, but then I remembered you need to get the book from in there. Unless you don't need the book either, to progress. I was thinking there's a chance this is an intended "thing" rather than a bug. Sounds far-fetched, but you never know.

Could be it's really just a bug. Whatever triggers the spawning of the gem got skipped for whatever reason.
