I'm stuck on the part where you have to read the book Taming the Holy Fire but since I didn't pick the scholar tag during character creation I can't decipher the book. Is there any other way around this? I've checked everywhere on the internet but the general consensus is that it's impossible to complete without a character with that tag.
I'm fine with being locked out from certain options and quest routes but it seems a little ridiculous that an a couple quest are completely locked away simply because I don't have a tag. There has to(should be) a backdoor or work around to let you continue the quest.

No it isn't possible. It's the one part of your character that you can't customize after creation.

huh, that's irritating. in terms of quests, scholar (mystic + scholar combo in particular) is about the only useful tag, which is a very weird design choice

It has been discussed to some extent about how quite a few (major) things would be inaccessible if your party don't have Scholar or Mystic or even a combination of both. But hey that's what you get for running around with an ignorant party of which no one bothered to stay in school! That's pretty realistic, tbh.

I'm not against being locked out of some stuff, but an entire island full of quests? All because I can't understand some song notes? Some situations make sense but you're telling me not one single person in all of reapers coast, not one, can help me understand the song sheets? As a game that touts the multiple ways you can accomplish the same objective it seems kind of ridiculous to be locked out of such a large piece of content simply because I didn't have a scholar tag.

realism hasn't really come into play in this game before this point, so there's no reason to start now

There's nothing wrong with realism. If you're party doesn't have a scholar it really wouldn't make sense that you'd be able to understand the material from some of these tomes. On the same branch though it would be realistic for someone else on the island to knew how to read them. So long as there are multiple ways to complete an objective there's no problem.
