...it is this here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DivinityOriginalSin/comments/70h66r/dos2_default_classes_chart/

This means wasting away talent and civil ability points like crazy when putting together a party?

I would like to NOT use the multiplayer "hack" (starting EoCApp.exe multiple times) to put together the party and I would also like to hit level 2 on the Merryweather, but as this stands, if I want Lohse as my companion as a conjurer (something I totally prefer):

1. I get the totally useless "Loremaster" to level 2 (1 is enough for act 1, because the enemies are not THAT tough), but I would really like her to have "Bartering" (while my main would get 1 into telekinesis and the rest into thievery)

2. When playing 4 instead of lone wolf 2 it's even worse... you can, basically, forget civil abilities in Fort Joy, more or less, if you don't give up on the promised freedom to choose (you want one thief, one who barters, one with lucky charm and one who persuades... but this leaves you with, I think, exactly one viable party composition)

3. Lohse as summoner gets "leadership"? Makes her suboptimal as a support summoner, because I'd like to have 10 into summoning, 2 into aero and as much as possible into hydro....

4. Again, this is made even worse when you also want to squeeze out max XP, because recruiting companions must be done at level 1 to minimize the collateral damage from the presets

Please give us a character building screen after we clicked "join me, my friend" in the recruitment dialog. Otherwise tons of civil and combat ability points are wasted.

After act 1 you gain the ability to fully respec any of your points with no consequence. There are mods to make this available in the first act.

Yes, I know... been through all of it, but I'm working on the "perfect run" (= max XP without using cheats and workarounds).

At the moment I'm trying to get 2 deathfog barrels out of the Merryweather without using "haste".

I completely agree that the companion presets are handled terribly. That's why I bit the bullet and installed the Fort Joy mirror mod. It makes things that much less frustrating early on, and it's up to you to abuse it for constant re-specs, or just use it that once (per companion) to fix those horrid presets.

While I can sort of live with the less-than-stellar attribute disposition of some presets (Int on a Conjurer that is expected to do physical damage in my party setup is kinda useless...) until getting to the Lady Vengeance, messed-up civil skills and/or talents are a constant major pain in the nether regions from the get go. Need a thief? Shadowblade is literally the only "choice" you have. What, you want a full magic damage party? Sucks to be you. You want a buddy for LW who can do the talk-to-Buddy shtick? Wayfarer or Conjurer, and that's it.

In a game with this much potential for individualization, that is just not good enough.

Easy solution, after choosing your companions combat role, add two more pages of dialogue:
1) "I'm also very versatile outside of combat. What do you want me to focus on?"
- Trade
- Diplomacy
- Lore
- Crime
- etc.
2) "I'm quite a talented fellow/gal. Do you want me to do what I do best, or do you need something specific?"
- Do what you do best (talent that befits the combat role, like now)
- Pet Pal
- Lone Wolf

That would deal with the bulk of the preset problems, and still be simple enough for new players to understand.

Yes, this would actually be enough, I agree.

For my current playthrough I did exactly this with the Fort Joy mirror mod: get all companions I want for my custom character, spec them properly (not having 2 loremasters, 2 barterers and 2 pet pal dudes is MUCH better) and then unloaded the mod.

And yes, I also agree with the "conjurer-INT-problem". All I want in my conjurer is CON and MEM (the WIT I need for the quests, the traps and the treasures I get from "stinky" - yes, I specced her with "Stench", because this talent is actually REALLY good - Sebille).
