I'm sorry if I'm posting old news; excuse my newbie-ness.
In the basement of Imp's Castle, after you kill off everything
and have hit the goodie room, there's a chest that weighs nothing.
I grabbed it and put some stuff into it, and sho' nuff it appeared
to function as a weight reduction container within my inventory.
(Overcoming my EverQuest addiction with this)

Does it weigh nothing even when closed?
If you move/change something in your inventory, the total weight should be re-calculated to include what is in the chest. There is a bug with this which can potentially destroy items;
major problem with weight

ummmmmm..... well...... *no*. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

Never occurred to me to close it. It actually weighs 500 lbs.

I feel quite foolish now. Never mind.

There are a couple chests which weigh nothing when open. I had not seen the one from the imp's castle mentioned before, so I was curious if it was the same thing, or not. There are also some containers which share the same inventory (what is put in one shows up in all). connected containers?

Do you suppose if you leave them open and in your
inventory they'll help, or just eventually cause
problems?

A few people have run into problems with chests disappearing, I think more often with the ones which have zero weight when open compare to other chests. Then again, several people have kept/used such chests without problems.
If you join the thieves' guild in Verdistis, there is a book there which acts as a container and only weights 5, so many people prefer that.

I did pick up the book in the thieves' guild.
Since your inventory without any books or chests
or other (are there other?) containers isn't
constrained by space, why would you want to
add the weight of that book (a whopping 5 lbs)
if it isn't going to have any weight reducing
effect? For neatness? Can you access your
hotkeyed potions or traps if they're stored in a
container? I put my teleporter stone in the book
and it wouldn't let me use it unless it was in my
general inventory.

Am I missing something? (quite possibly)

Containers: chests (weight 2-500), barrels (500), Sacks of grain (100), Elven cupboard (300) at the foot of Lanilor's bed, the book from the thieves' guild (5), vases / golden jugs....

There are a couple uses for chests, in addition to keeping your main inventory clearer and making it easier to move around groups of items;

- Opening a container in your inventory and drag and dropping items into it is not considered stealing by NPCs, so you can loot shops without waiting for merchants to turn their backs to you, wander out of sight, etc. Removing these items from the container (the first time) is considered stealing, so make sure you are alone.

- The weight you are carrying is not updated right away when you place an item in a container in your inventory. While this can be dangerous (major problem with weight), it is useful for moving a lot of items at once.

Well of course. I guess I need to learn to think outside the box (or barrel, or vase, or cupboard) when considering what is or isn't a container.
I guess the clue would be that an item has weight, helloooooooo.... *ahem*.

Aha! Good to know! I will make full and good use of this immediately. (Or when I get home and back to the game, at any rate.)

Thanks much for the info!
