I tend to craft poison arrows for cash in Fort Joy plus I use thievery to get all the available stuff.
After reaching Driftwood this isn't necessary though. It's relatively easy to get bartering to 10 (human with maxed bartering plus trade secrets, Justinia's Favour and any random amulet and belt granting +1 bartering). Selling tons of useless stuff grants you enough gold to buy whatever goodies you see. With or without another character investing in lucky charm.
Although I noticed they changed the markups and discounts in the last patch. In the previous versions you practically bought items with 10 bartering at the same price you could sell them. Meaning you practically just borrowed the items from the vendors for a level at no cost. Now you will actually lose some money in the process.
EDIT: very true. Crafting needs an overhaul in this game.
