I'm on Blood Moon island playing Lone Wolf and do not have scholar tag, so totally shut out of dungeons and sudden end to some quests, quite a bit if xp I wont get because there is no way to to change your characters tags or get new ones or hire mercs with the tag.

Ridiculous, really just plain Ridiculous!!!

If you have a custom character, you can re-spec at the magic mirror located in the Lady Vengeance.

Otherwise can you try to hire an NPC and recruit the origin back afterwards?

How do I know the character I hire will have scholar tag?

If they are NPC, you can try to change the tags, would be my suggestions, otherwise you have to try them out.
