If you answer the questions correctly, that should be it. He does freak out later during the ceremony. Were you able to handle terenium (or whatever it was called) ore that early? Found a blood stone to cure it? Anyway, if you are in the temple when he freaks out (it sounds like not), he'll be back with a few friends. I'm also wondering (don't know) if you need to actually read the books to trigger it? Are you sure you didn't miss a question? Can you get into the hatch in the church?
I never tried it but it may be possible to fight the guards to get to the temple but, if it is truly bugged, would it be worth the effort? You may even be able to sneak past them - not sure. Have you tried an earlier save?
