Composer already gave some great advice about just playing around with it and I'm sure other players here have some more great tips as well!
I myself played by giving them a main role (melee, magic,...), mostly starting off with the suggested class and started expanding on their skills throughout the game. There's no big hurry here as you'll get plenty of new skills while playing and you'll have all the freedom to mix and match those skills and attributes as you go.
