I'm very new to this game and it all seems to be really overwhelming. I'm playing as an ranger and have now the red prince as an companion as an wizzard for his fire stuff. and now i'm adding Ifan to my team and i don't know what class he must be. an Wayfarer an tank or something like an fighter or knight? I have loads of questions about this game and i get this has an big learning curve. as i'm already watching a ton of guides and you really have to experiment yourself alot. maybe you guys can put in some beginner tips or somthng.

Hello! Welcome to the game and the community! :] This isn't really the right forum to be posting this, as this is the modding area, for those making mods for the game!
A better place to peek would be here!

Balancing is a bit wonky, if you want to be really strong, two lonewolves with warfare based stats, some necromancy and stuff and you're good to go. I played my first playthrough with a "World of warcraft party", and it was manageable, but tanking and healing isn't as much of a thing (unfortunately) as pure dps and strategically picking off enemies.

But half the fun is just diving into the sandbox, try, experiment and explore. Enjoy the adventure :]

Went ahead and moved the topic to the appropriate section of the forum smile
Composer already gave some great advice about just playing around with it and I'm sure other players here have some more great tips as well!

I myself played by giving them a main role (melee, magic,...), mostly starting off with the suggested class and started expanding on their skills throughout the game. There's no big hurry here as you'll get plenty of new skills while playing and you'll have all the freedom to mix and match those skills and attributes as you go.

Thank you for the information! so i should just post in the help/tips/tricks section for guidance? I know about the lone wolf talent but i wanted to get a full party. I'm playing as an elf ranger and now my red prince is playing as an wizard. Ifan says his main is wayfarer but then i have to add another range character. So i put him as an conjurer because i read he the stronger you're summoning ability is the stronger that wolf of him gets.

Also is 4 the max amount of members you can get in your party?

Yes, 4 is the maximum without mods, if there are mods to get more members into your party.

The major weak point I see in that team is the Wizard.

The weakest team you can make is one which does 3 of one damage type and 1 of the other, because the 1 will not be able to take down their armor type very well.

You have two physical damage dealers: Ranger and Knight, one magic damage dealer in the Wizard, and Summoner who can do either. For your team to work, for the Wizard to be able to contribute reliably, the Summoner will need to focus on using elemental totems and incarnates. However, half the summoners damage comes from totems, and there's no guarantee who they'll target.

You probably didn't read enough. Ifan's wolf is widely considered to be BAD even with max summoning, compared to the Incarnate which Summoners get.

You can play pretty much anything, I myself built a pretty inefficient party when I played the game, because I didn't really know how to build a character properly and how the class schools synergize with each other, but I still managed to finish the game just fine, even if a lot of fights were somewhat of a slog.

But I guess I could try giving you some basic tips on character building I picked up later by checking various other builds and the skills you can learn in the game.

1. Don't spread your attributes between multiple damage sources, only specialize into one of the three (strength, finesse, intelligence). This one is somewhat obvious, but if you feel like you want a character that uses both magic and melee, it just doesn't work. Same for learning skills that scale with an attribute you don't spec into, it's a waste of slot most of the time, unless the skill has some really good utility.

2. Check the bonuses of all the schools, they don't apply only to the skills they let you learn, but they affect everything, for example the bonus from Huntsman works with spells too.

3. Check the skills of other schools than your character uses, there are usually utility skills that work with any class and it's sometimes worth putting that one point into said school just so you can learn the skill, just be sure it doesn't scale with a stat you don't have or that it gets resisted by the opposite armor to your main damage type (unless you intend to use that skill to help your other party members). This is how you usually build a hybrid character, you specialize in one school and pick utility skills from others.

Anyway, there's a mechanic in the game that let's you craft completely unique skills you won't get from anywhere else than crafting. The game doesn't even hint at such possibility iirc, so it's a good thing to know. You could probably try to figure the recipes out yourself or just look it up, I myself found the recipes kind of counter intuitive and had to look it up in the end.

Thanks for the advice :)

Yes i'm not far in the game , i'm a couple of hours in fort joy and just figuring things out. I had a couple of fights (crocodiles , the arena , boss griff) and i see indeed that my wizard is the most useless of my team, not completely but most of the time i'm using shearing daggers and fossil strike with him and teleportation since i got that glove on him. But can i still pick skillbooks from other school that make him more powerfull? Now i have Geo and pyro skills invested on him. On Ifan i'm investing in Summoning.

About the wolf, i don't even have Source points yet to caste him. I heard you get those points later in the game. But should i replace the wolf or just keep him while i'm investing in summoning anyway.

The issue with the wizard is less that the wizard doesn't have enough skills, it's that enemies in the game have physical and magical armor. When you have only one person who is able to chip away at the magical armor, it will take longer to remove the armor so you can do permanent damage, compared to having multiple physical attackers, who can strip armor faster because more are attacking.

You can try to mitigate that by havint your Summoner focus on elemental casting, but the totems will pick random targets.

You can't replace the wolf, it's a permanent skill. You can use the wolf, it's just that you can probably find better Source skills to spend the point on, and other schools with cheaper summons. (Most notably Necromancy.)

1. I'm also using constition for wizard and wits for my ranger. Mostly investing in 2 attributes of the strenght of that character if thats what you're meaning.

2. Yes so you're saying for example i could use 2 points or so in huntsman on my wizard to do more damage from above

3. by schools you mean the Skills section with Warfare en so on? So i can buy those skillbooks from other schools that sometimes require an 1 point investment into for example necromancer to use that skill.
I saw that ranger had the first aid ability but when i began playing it wasn't there so i have to buy that skill and equipe it in an memory slot?

Finally about those recipes. you're saying i can craft unique skills. Do i get those recipes just as for example knife-on-a-stick buy reading a book you got from a vendor or found in a chest? So far i only crafted a bow and some food and potions.

Sorry for my noobishness it is my first game in this series and this kind of rpg.

Really appreciate the good tips :D

Hmm, if you want to keep your mage, try prioritizing just one school, which you should try to max as soon as possible, while only putting one or two points into a secondary one, which you could try maxing out later. Leveling both at the same time splits your damage in two different elemental damage types and you'll lag behind in damage compared to everyone else.
You could probably focus pyro first, for raw damage and only put enough points into geo, so you can use its skills for utility like slowdown from oil surfaces, which you can then detonate with your fire spells.
Geo also has some skills which will help your physical damage dealing party members, as they cause effects, which are blocked by physical armor.
You can pick skills from other schools, but I wouldn't recommend doing it that early, it's mostly good to get some utility skills, that you think would benefit you, like something for mobility for example, so you can position yourself better.
Just don't spread out your ability point into too many things at once.

Anyway, you don't have to worry much about permanently screwing up your build, because you'll be able to respec later in the game.

About the wolf, I only tried it once or twice, and it wasn't really good, but I didn't spec into summonner with Ifan, though i hear all the time, that the wolf sucks even with max summonner. You're better off just using your familiar, which you can turn into any damage type your party needs, give him various buffs and skills, and at max summonner, he'll receive a pretty good upgrade.

What I meant is, don't put points into both strength and intelligence for example, only focus one of the three damage based attributes, then put whatever you feel fit into con/mem/wit.

Yeah, or Warfare for your necro, because Warfare increases ALL physical damage, and necro spells do physical.

Yep, you have to buy the skill and learn it, then you can swap it out anytime outside combat. Maybe you'll think it's useful and keep it, or you'll think it's trash and never "equip" it again.

From my own experience, I don't think there is a book that will teach you how to craft these skills, so you'll have to find that out yourself. A lot of people knew about this feature, because it was one of the big features showcased many times in the developer videos, but that's it.

Another question:

Nebora the blacksmith in Fort Joy has been killed while fighting some magisters with me. I already escaped fort joy and removed my collar. Has this some consequences for me? I think not because i already did her quest but i'm not certain

None at all. She removes only one collar maximum anyway and is not the real collar remover.
