I didn't know it was essential to save Gareth. He was killed. And I'm much further along in the game. Can I continue or will I have to start over?

Also, I thought I had the Exter wand for the Shriekers, but now can't find it. Is there another way around them n that far northeast corner?

I found a way past the Shriekers and I'm now on the boat. But, Gareth is still dead

If he can actually be killed it means he's not essential. It would have been a gamebreaking issue and found out and fixed by now.

In my experience, he's not that great of a guy anyway - in terms of both personality and helpfulness. Just move on and don't worry about it.

The game is designed, so that pretty much everyone can be killed. There are only few exceptions who survive their death.

How the hell did you get passed the Shriekers?!!! You don't even have the source vampirism skill yet.

Which Shrieker? The Shrieker near Gareth? There are other ways to enter the castle ruins, where no Shrieker is keeping watch. You also can find wands, which will give you source vampirism, same goes for a hidden helmet of Bracchus. If you help the 'dragon' he also may help you with the Shriekers at the end.
