That is not an example of a double negative. While schools will certainly teach 'proper' English, the structure is much less strict than many other languages.
It is entirely possible to scout new areas and find traps or opponents with a companion or single main character, without always having both main characters grouped close together.
The OP wasn't asking it it was easy or likely to get through without having played before, but if it was impossible or not.
