I guess you mean you only played co-op before.
Each origin has certain characters they want to talk to. If they are not an Avatar, you can only see their conversation from the outside, and it follows a pre-scripted path (assuming you haven't interfered). If you are playing as that origin, you control the conversation and it can go in a few different ways.
