Hi, we are a group of 4 players looking to play the game all together, However 2 of us tried to test the game beforehand to see if everything works fine and we hit a problem. Upon launching the game in multiplayer, after character creation, the screen just goes black - we can press escape and hear the menu pop-up, and I think we even interacted with some objects, but the screens are completely black. (In single player both of us after character selection get the cutscene, and appear on the ship no problem)

try putting the lighting quality to medium in the graphical options.
When I'm in quality ultra, I lose the scenes but keep the buttons. Reducing the lighting quality is the only thing that makes it come back (after trying every other single difference between quality high & ultra)

I'm having the exact same issue, after character creation on a coop game the screen just stays blank.

Have you managed to find a solution to this issue??

I found a semi-reliable work around.

I had narrowed this past blackscreen issue to a specific friend it was occurring with. All my other coop friends did not have blackscreen issue.

I am not in front of that computer at moment, but I navigated to the Larian Studios folder that had my config settings/user profile. (My Documents folder?) I then renamed that folder(added a "2" at the end of it) and relaunched game. It created a new folder that still had the name of my profile in it, and my saved games, but it reset all my controls and other Options/Settings.

I am now able to launch coop games, BUT....
I still get the black screen, but you have to let it sit there anywhere from 1min or longer, and then the intro movie starts to play. When the intro movie starts, just hit Escape to skip the movie and get the game loading as fast as possible. You should be able to load in and have no further issues.

You also might get another blackscreen that just never loads. But after extended testing, this method works the majority of the time. But see the next factor below, that might also play a role:

One possible additional factor, or perhaps an issue in my headed that I did not get further testing on:
When all your friends are creating characters, do not let any of them hit the Start Game option at the bottom. When everyone is ready, the Host should hit Start Game, and once Host is on waiting screen, everyone else should hit Start Game immediately.
My friend that was causing this blackscreen issue, would always eventually get Disconnected From Server(I think was the verbage) on the blackscreen if he hit Start Game button before the Host was ready.

My friends and I encountered the same problem but we found a reliable workaround. Essentially, you create a multiplayer lobby with one or more custom characters for them to log into later.

You should first identify which player (or players) were causing the issue. In our case only one player was causing this problem and games without them ran fine. Try running a few lobbies to narrow it down.

Next, look up how to create multiple custom characters. There should be guides on youtube on how to do that, I used the one by “Channel5 Gaming”.

We didn’t encounter any problems using this method and the game ran fine. It seems like the problem occurs only during character creation.

so actually this bug may have been around for 3 years? are you trying to connect the gog and steam versions?
