Nevermind, I found it

It was because I was running another version of the game......launched the wrong executable file

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\Classic\EoCApp.exe

instead of

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\DefEd\bin\EoCApp.exe
