You can use Spirit Vision to reveal the spirit of Johanna Surrey.
After you have talked to her for the first time, if you talk to her again, the first two dialog options are:
1) ask about the heirloom you've heard about
2) ask about the shard you've found
Option #2 shows up even if you haven't found any "shard". Selecting it results in the same response as option #1.
But option #2 will no longer be there after you have actually picked up the item in question. I think this dialog option is showing up in the wrong place.
