If the model has some specific sort of material that responds to the color / brightness values in the Color component, then you may be able to fade it that way. I haven't quite figured out the correlation between the material editor and that component though (specifically how the color value can make a material cover more of the model height-wise, or what nodes would need to exist for it to use the color component's color value to fade it).
What I typically do instead is manipulate/animate the scale, to have it quickly appear that way, or mask it appearing with some sort of smoke.
