Is it still possible to add an avatar to my forum profile? The instructions pinned here are obviously out of date, and I haven't been able to find anything just poking around.

It is, someone just needed to move you out of the "new users" group, which I've now done. And behold, you now have the, er, splendorific wondrousness that is the default avatar! Which you may now change to whatever takes your fancy.

Click on your username on the top right of the screen, "edit profile" and the options for adding an avatar are near the bottom of the page.
They're initially disabled for new users but you should be able to do so now.

But when i try to add mine, it say to me that the account is updated but my avatar is not changed.

It still keeps saying improper image. How annoying. Ah well, thanks anyway. Are you trying to link or upload? Uploading isn't enabled, so it might be that; and linked images have a maximum size of 120×120px and 100KB (well, the decimal sort so actually 97K), and only jpg/jpeg and png are supported; external URLs must end with one of those extensions, so URL-shorteners probably won't work.

Realizing this is an old topic, I seem to be having the issue where the Avatar that I set is rendered blank. It successfully is added but on desktop, testing with multiple browsers, it does not appear even though the link has worked and right clicking on the blank takes me to the image. Strangely, however, it does work and appear on my phone browser so I am not entirely sure what I did to mess this all up. It does end with .png, and it used to work a couple weeks ago but now is blank.
I apologize if this is dumb or a non-issue.

Could you send a link? Either post here or PM.
Is the image on e.g. your own website or an image-sharing one? A lot of sites prohibit direct links to their stuff from other sites so that may also be a possibility.

I think the ancient Divinity 1 avarars are no more, or exist only partially there, aren't they ?
