Hey fellas!

this is my very first time playing Divinity Original Sin II (never played the first title), so i find myself quite confused about the general progression of the game. I have created a custom undead human inquisitor, which I really like. So my first question is:

1) How does the spells progression work? Do I get new spells by levelling up, or do I have to acquire scrolls to learn them (i have basic skills in warfare and necromancy and telekynesis)? And also, can I get proficient in other magic categories, such as fire, earth or whatever? I am just level 2, but still have the same spells of level 1.

2) I only have Red Prince as a companion right now, and I made it a Knight, but I am not quite satisified with my choice, since he mostly uses warfare skills which are identycal to my inquisitor. Is there any way to change his class, or do i have to pick another fellow? Which other classes/companios would you suggest me?

Thank you very much for the attention!

You need to find, buy or craft skill books to learn new skills.
You can invest in multiple skill categories, within reason. After act 1 you can easily respec, so can adjust if you end up spreading your skill points too thin, or boost something you end up not using.

The initial class choice only determines the starting skills, equipment and attribute/skill/talent point distribution. You can adjust builds after that however you wish, or if you have not progressed very far, reload the auto save before recruiting the Red Prince and choose a different starting preset. The other companions are nearby, as well, so you could replace him, if you wish.

A quick note, there is nothing wrong with having multiple melee characters in a group. The game has 3 options for strength based melee characters, sword and board (shield), two-handed weapons and dual weapon (single handed weapon in both hands). While there is some overlap in the skills, not all warfare skills fit all three of the builds. As an inquisitor is set up two-handed weapons at the start and fighters are sword and board, the skills that are most useful will be slightly different with each. For example, for the fighter, Bouncing Shield throw is highly effective for damage. For the inquistor, two handed weapons have a longer reach, so Whirlwind will be more effective at hitter more opponents. Beyond this, the figher has Geomancy and starts with Fossil Strike, which is a highly effect early game CC (Crowd Control) skill. Also, with the shield, the fighter should not be taking a lot of damage. The inquisitor with a two-handed weapon should be swinging for the fences, basically the goal is to accept you will take some damage, but know that because you hit much harder so you can kill your opponent before they kill you. Necromancy aides this is two ways. First, passively, each point in necromancy will give you effectively 5% life steal. That is all your damage will give 5% of that damage back to your health. Also, Necromacy should start you out with Mosquito Swarm which will directly give you health back.
The point is, that even though you are starting with two melee focus characters, the play style for each is quite different. You may find you enjoy playing both.
