Larian Studios Forums Divinity: Original Sin 2 Divinity - Original Sin 2 - Bugs & Technical Problems Fresh install of game does not launch

Hello dear Larian community,

As stated in the title, I have purchased and installed DoS2 DE on my Windows 10 PC (Win 10 pro, Version 1909, OS Build 18363.476) but the game does not launch at all. It shows me the custom cursor of the game on a black screen, yet it crashes instantly. If it doesn't send me back to desktop, it stays frozen like that and I am only able to end it's task via Task Manager (which it shows "Not Responding")

Some things I'd like to mention;

• I'd like to share my DxDiag
• I'd like to share the CrashDump file that was created upon a crash
• I do have a sound card & is defaulted
• Did a fresh install of the game & VC Redists automatically installed via Steam during game install
• "Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application" does not show EoCApp's crash log even when sorted as "Newest first"
• Classic does not launch as well as Definitive Edition
• I do not have an antivirus
• I do not have Teamviewer or Razer products/software
• I have MSI Afterburner software but is not running, ended tasks within task manager
• I have no mods installed, I am a literal new player both to the genre and DoS
• I have tried setting my PC resolution to low (1280x720, 800x600) as well as tried 60hz (Natively 144hz)
• gold.log file is empty inside, no log was created in it
• Tried enabling and disabling Steam Cloud Sync within the game's Steam Properties window under Updates tab

Unfortunately, that CrashDump file was empty. If you check the folder again in details view, please create another rar file with any non-zero byte CrashDump files and provide another link, or email supportdos2@larian.com.


Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? Firewalls can cause conflicts (generally on startup or loading screens) and overlays from graphics tweaking/monitoring programs or chat programs can also caused issues.

Try exiting out of the Steam client, and starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\DefEd\bin\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and running as administrator (or '..\Divinity Original Sin 2\Classic\EoCApp.exe' for the original release).

If you didn't already do so, try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and delete the 'Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition' folder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Normally I would suggest renaming the folder for troubleshooting purposes, but if you don't have any saved games that isn't an issue.
Next, extract the replacement folder from this download into your '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder, and see if that will let you start the game.
The graphicSettings.lsx file is set to 1280x720 Windowed mode (so possibly in use when you made the screenshot), Very Low quality preset and low audio quality, which you can change in the options (manually, or hit autodetect) if this gets the game to start.

Try resetting your graphics driver's 3D settings to default (right click an open area of the desktop to start the nvidia Control Panel)
Try switching the game to start on the integrated graphics; they are not officially supported, but the HD 630 does have hardware support for DirectX 11, so should be able to start the game (performance wouldn't be as good, of course, and there could be texture issues).
The location varies a bit depending on the GPU and driver version, but in the options there will be a section where you can set specific application to run on either the 'high performance' GPU or 'power saving'.

Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.
