It's certainly controversial, and I have mixed feelings. Part of me would like the "pretty elves" sort of thing but I also like the idea of them being slightly too alien for us, which is in some ways the whole point. I'm also reminded of the controversy over the redesign of the elves in Dragon Age between Oranges and II where they went from looking like skinny humans with pointy ears to oddly-proportioned, long-necked creatures. I wasn't entirely sure what to think but got used to it quickly enough and appreciated that they were now more distinct. Did Larian go too far with doing the same thing? Dunno, it's subjective, I suppose.

The corpse-eating stuff isn't new either and e.g. the bosmer in Elder Scrolls do the same. I assume there's also more history to it than that; so yeah, it's gross, but more dispassionately it's also an interesting take on things.
