Hi,

As you can see I have an Apple computer! I ran the game successfully until I updated to Catalina OSX 10.15.2. That update gave me some problems (most importantly I lost an internet connection on my iMac, not on my other laptops). These issues I resolved step by step. However I was unable to start the game because it would not connect to the server. In the end I erased my disc and started afresh with a clean install of 10.15.2 and used Migration Assistant to move all data across from my Time Capsule including the Div 2 game. Exact same problem. However I could start a new game which I did. I now have a new problem I cannot save!

Error Savegame load failed
Error code(s): [1]

Help!

Don't know how on Apple, but in Windows, you would make sure, that the save folder, or perhaps game folder (preferably both) isn't set to "read only". Like I mentioned, I have no experience with Apple computers, if it doesn't have such function, then I can't help. What does the error code read?

Hi Levianne,

Error Code is 1. I bought the game from the Apple App store not Steam. As such I am not sure how to access the game folders. I would like to clear the cache if I knew where it was!

Thanks for input

I mean there should be an error log somewhere, because "Error code is 1" doesn't say much about the issue, try looking around the folders, even Apple computers should have those, there must be access to them. I really can't help you more, Apple is a mystery to me.

Actually, '[1]' is a variable, where the actual error code(s) should be substituted in the error message.

For the App Store version, the path is: /Users/<UserName>/Library/Containers/com.larian.dos2/Data/Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition
From there you can delete the contents of the 'LevelCache' subfolder, or check the '../PlayerProfiles/<ProfileName>/Savegames/Story' folder for saves.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs before starting the game, especially anti-virus and any backup programs that may be monitoring the Documents folder?

Try creating a new OSX administrator user account (either with the Documents folder in the default location, or on a different drive, if available), switch to that account and try starting the game from there.

Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Start/restart your Mac and hold the Shift key down as soon as the progress bar comes up in the startup window, releasing it after the desktop appears. Alternately, from the login window, hold the Shift key when you click the Log In button, and release it when you see the Dock.

Hi Raze,

I have used my Time Capsule to do a Restore from a week prior to the date that the problem occurred and when the OSX was Mojave as I assumed Catalina was itself the problem. I am now seeing an "error" that I first saw before the "the Savegame load failed" and that is "Error Server shutting down". Should I sort that first or is it all part of the same error?

It may be part of the same problem. Please email supportdos2@larian.com with a save or two (or a Dropbox or Google drive link, etc), and I can check it/them here. If you are using any non-Larian mods, also include a list of those enabled and/or the modsettings.lsx file from your profile folder.
For the App Store version, each save is a folder in the /Users/<UserName>/Library/Containers/com.larian.dos2/Data/Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition/PlayerProfiles/<ProfileName>/Savegames/Story' folder.
In Finder you can zip a file or folder by right clicking on it/them and selecting compress.

With the error starting after an OS update, that was likely the issue, but if restoring a backup didn't help, there may be a problem with the saves themselves.

Hi Raze,

I have sent you a Save as a zip file however I had copied it to myself just in case and I could not open it!!

We have both spent a great deal of time on this and I thank you very much for your input. However I think it is time to call it a day! I am going for the nuclear option! Can you please provide me with a full set of uninstall instructions for my Mac. Once I have done that I will buy a new game from the App store and start again. Such a shame but it has been a rather frustrating time for me and probably you as well!!!

I was able to open the zip file, and the save loaded fine here, so the issue isn't a problem with the save itself.

Other than the install folder, there should just be the '../Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition' with the saves, profile(s) and configuration files for the game.

FWIW, there is another game update being prepared, to be released in the new year. The game update could potentially fix / reset / avoid whatever the problem is currently, or maybe after a break you'll have the patience for some more troubleshooting.

Hi again Raze,

Yes I am full of patience! What I cannot quite understand is why/how I still have the problem when I completely erased my HD and then did a full reinstall from my Time Capsule from a date one week prior to when the problem first showed up particularly as it came with an earlier OSX.

Could the file system have been changed with the Catalina update, and not converted back when restoring the backup?
Case sensitive files systems are not supported; I think case-insensitive APFS is default since High Sierra (HFS+ case-insensitive before that), so that probably isn't the problem if you didn't change it. You can double check in Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities).

I'm not sure what else could have been changed, and not affected by restoring the backup, unless there was something not backed up, or a setting not restored.
An automatic update of a security program, etc, in the backup could re-introduce a conflict that wasn't present when the backup was created. In that case, most likely the clean boot would have helped, though.

A hardware issue could cause this type of behaviour, but then I wouldn't expect the symptoms to be so specific.

Hi again Raze,

I have been unable to play the game since December. You mentioned a game update is being prepared, any news on that?

That game update has been released (as well as a hotfix for a couple of new issues that that introduced). The current game version on PC is 3.6.58.1306.

If you updated to Catalina again, it made changes to how file permissions are handled. Usually that blocks the game from even seeing the profile(s), but it wouldn't hurt to check, in case restoring from the backup half bypassed that.
In System Preferences, Security and Privacy, Privacy, click on 'Files and Folders' to get a list of apps that have requested folder access, and allow D:OS 2 access to the Documents folder, if applicable.

Try verifying local files:

Terminal
cd ~/Library/Application\ Support\ ... up to the Divinity Original Sin 2.app folder
codesign -vvv Divinity\ -\ Original\ Sin\ 2.app

For the first command, it may be easier to browse to the install folder in Finder, then drag and drop the location into an open Terminal window.
The second command takes a while, and will output some lines starting with '--prepared' or '--validated'. If everything is fine, it will end with:

Divinity - Original Sin 2.app: valid on disk
Divinity - Original Sin 2.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement

If you create a new OSX user account, start the game from there, create a profile and start a new game, are you still getting the same error when trying to save?

Hi,

Taken a long time but I have sorted it. Had several goes on verifying local files and other stuff. Failed probably due to my lack of expertise in the workings of Macs! However new user account worked perfectly. I have to start from beginning but to be honest that is best because i have generally forgotten how to play the game! I still am intrigued as why it all ent wrong in the first place but thanks for your help over the 6 months or so!

I'm glad you got it working again. You can try copying a save over to the new account to see if it will load there, but it is a bit of a moot point if you'd rather restart anyway.

BTW, there is another game update currently being tested.
