Agreed the premise is conceptually dark but the tone is somewhat lessened by some of the game design mechanics/elements and Larian's style is hardly what I would call serious.

This is all because of the lack of day/night cycle giving a false impression. Other people have said it but when you tally up the themes this game is about as dark as you can get.

+1 totally agree on this one, just having something that makes it that sometimes (by choice or time passage) makes it so that you explore the risen road by night or arrive at dusk at the grove would really convey the narrative they have which now just causes cognitive dissonance with the current sunny summery atmosphere. I didn't think of it like that before but the impact that adding night (in any form) rather than only having indoor dark spaces might have on the congruence between narrative and how it is represented in world is actually huge. All the other stuff related to adding night (cycle based on rest, possible mechanical effects on gameplay) would even be secondary to Baldur's gate 3 actually succeeding at telling a convincing story in the DnD universe. Something which in my opinion after the nauthiloid crash, the current game doesn't even seem to try anymore and just gives up coherence in terms of the story's actually dark content and its graphical representation, either adding exceptions (Astarion can be in light) or simply ignoring it (goblins attacking grove at lunchtime ?).

It's a good point actually, In the Forgotten Realms, goblins aren't really known for being diurnal. They have darkvision, lair in caves, and are traditional night raiders. Goblins don't have agriculture, they scavenge food from the surroundings, and steal from or raid other lairs or small villages of other races in the vicinity. A daylight attack against a fortified grove filled with druids seems out of character. They know that they have better night vision than humans, and in fact have worse vision in the light.
