Or even make the origins more vague with room for me to flush them out myself instead of presenting me with a pre-made character.

Oh well. I'm going custom for my first run at the very least.

I think Swen said during the demo they were still not sure about that. I'm guessing no, at least for class. Which class Gale, Wyll and Shadowheart are seems integral to their identities.

Disappointed
I liked the vampire character
But I would like to change your appearance (face, hair, etc.) and choose another class frown

Playing the same game again only from the perspective of one of your companions or are these total different stories? Do i get some kind of bonus when i am going to play the origin characters first or is this just an optional gameplay?

However i´m going to play my own custom character for sure. That's the basic idea of a pen & paper game: slip into any character you want to be. I don't like it when you have to hatch pre-made characters like in Dragon Age.

A pity that Swen doesn´t showed in the presentation the face / body customization options. I´m looking forward to them. I also hope for different voice options like in the Baldur Gates or Icewind Dale games.

What I am generally very critical of is that there are no plans for localization of the speech according to the Steam site. The games had localized the language over 20 years ago and should be standard by 2020.

I think it would have been fun to play Imogen in BG1. "Hey ya!"

Having fixed pre-gen characters and, for a party-based game, also fixed companions is antithetical to the definition of an RPG. A huge part of what makes a game an RPG is being able to completely and freely play whatever character you want to play.

I personally don't see myself ever playing an Origin character; however, I do see why some people might appreciate their existence.

Some people who aren't entirely familiar with the D&D system might not understand how important certain ability scores are to certain classes. For example, when building a Wizard, obviously high Intelligence is recommended. But how high? Is 12 high enough? What about 14? 16? Or should it be as high as possible, at 18?

What about Backgrounds? Is it best to pick a background that matches your class skill and tool proficiencies, or a background that expands your class skill and tool proficiencies?

These are all aspects of character creation that casual players probably don't want to deal with. Having pregenerated characters (or Origin characters) allows for a click and play without requiring the player to sit down and study game guides before making a character.

Optional origin characters are a fantastic idea, unfortunately, they had the downside of making customer character playthroughs in DOS2 bland in comparison. Hopefully, they can address that for BG3.

In my experience with origin characters in DoS and DAO games, they are great for second and third playthroughs, because you know the base story and you can dig deeper into the character plots. They could be really fun. You usually have much more dialogue choices customized for your Origin character when you have a fixed background, but I hope they make the custom characters interesting, as promised.

counterpoint to the optionality of origin characters:

Owlcat right now is on a big push on makng the choices you make with your custom PC matter a lot, i think that should be a more important focus than premades

I have a big fear with Origin Characters like Divinity: 6 Origin characters= only 6 NPC for all the games... And I don't want played a NPC.

A large pool of cool NPC is one pillar of BG series.

I want a main background for the main custom character with a lot of links with the story as usual.

If I can pull my big boy pants up long enough to get over the game being turn based, I will play all the origin characters as well as my long running custom characters, Doom , Nexus and Khazadoom.

Yes this will take years, I always get my money's worth.

DRAGON FIRE-AND DOOM Dragons? Splendid things, lad-so long as ye look upon them only in tapestries, or in the masks worn at revels, or from about three realms off...
