I think it's pretty close! It doesn't seem to be very dark, which is what Baldur's Gate was I'll give you that. There was a distinct style in american cRPG's back then. Diablo 2, Jagged Allience 2, Fallouts & IE games felt mature despite actually being very cartoony, which is very hard to pull off. It was a mixture of excellent sound design and excellent art direction. It's too early to say if Larian can quite get to that level (which I don't think any RPG game since has, sadly) but visually BG3 reminds me a lot of the IE games.
