No you can't have it both ways.
Theres limits to how much of a good backstory you can write for a question mark.
Witcher 3 with random generic characters wouldn't work.
Game gives you both totally custom ones or fixed ones with more backstory thats freedom of choices taking things away is no gain.
Of course the non custom ones will have a bit deeper interaction but that's fine. Increases the replay-ability anyway.
