While it's true that not having an Origin story would limit some of the responses you have to NPCs, there is still the robust Background system in place. Who's to say that the backgrounds won't add enough to make up for not having an Origin? yup u got a point there. Oh wow thats nice, thx for the info Special. Altho that is nice to hear my OCD brain will still keep asking what did u miss anyways but that will be answered on the 2nd playthrough i guess..

A random and perhaps pedantic observation is that I'm surprised at the article using the name "Divinity 2" when they presumably mean "Original Sin 2". IMHO it's a name they should avoid using altogether because of its potential ambiguity. It didn't create a good impression for me, certainly.

I think that's unlikely unless there is one we don't know about. Origin stories are a huge amount of work. They have already said there are more companions coming, 5 more are brewing right now (but not ready yet) according to an interview and I suspect there will be at least 1 companion for every PHB class.

"class, race, background and class" I assume the article meant subclass.

But the dev being interviewed specifically says it won't be as good as what you get using a pre-gen character. So it's better than in D:OS2. So what? Bottom line is that it is not good enough.

The origin stories are that of a distinct character, their life, background, wants and needs. Like your sister or brother.
A custom character can not be shoehorned into the story of another character. just as a stranger can be shoehorned into your sister/brother's life experiences.
The writers can not write a distinctive story for every character's life outside of their race, class, background that is chosen and the need for getting the tadpole out of your head. Otherwise, it would feel like your custom character is just another origin character.
If the writers write that the custom character is a vegan. Every custom character would be a vegan in the storyline, so there is only so much that they can get explicit with the characters story.
It would hamper your imagination of your custom character and how you would roleplay your character.

Well you could have it such that we can custom-create our own PC but choose to add in a pre-gen background story from a list of options. Doesn't have to be a lot of options, maybe 4 or 5.

Exactly this. And have in maaaany rpgs the option to play whatever you want and still have an awesome story, like it was in bg2. Doesn't matter if you had a female orc character whatever. Also neverwinter, or every mmorpg, Arcanum, the Elder scrolls or whatever. Premade Characters for beginners to help them? Yes Premade characters that have a better story than a selfmade? Never ever. And to be honest. This whole concept of origin characters is for me one of the worst things for BG3 until now. I really don't get why it is a benefit at all.

Don't Origin character only add something, not subtract? If you had no origin characters in the game, and thus no unique responses for them, but instead had generic responses only, wouldn't that leave you in the same place as you would be in by creating a custom character such as is done in most games (e.g. Skyrim)? They do have tags you can select to make your character receive specific responses, however that may or may not satisfy. Or is it that non-Origin characters will seem shallow in comparison to Origin characters without the voice acted cut scenes? In other words, get rid of Origin characters so they don't make custom characters seem shallow?

No you can't have it both ways.
Theres limits to how much of a good backstory you can write for a question mark. Witcher 3 with random generic characters wouldn't work.
Game gives you both totally custom ones or fixed ones with more backstory thats freedom of choices taking things away is no gain. Of course the non custom ones will have a bit deeper interaction but that's fine. Increases the replay-ability anyway.

What replayability? I will NEVER ever play a pre-gen character, even if I replay the game a 100 times. For a large number of people this is exactly the kind of thing that tends to be very black and white. Either you accept pre-gen characters or you don't. So in reality it takes away replayability for me. After I have played the game one time with a custom character, I will have experienced all the (very limited) character content available to custom characters (minor differences for race/class not withstanding). The only way I would get to expose myself to any new/different content would be to try one of the pre-gen characters - which I flat-out will not do.

Do you believe that by including Origin characters, Larian will spend less resources on avenues for custom characters to be fleshed out and developed? What would you like for them to do?

The Custom character will have unique elements compared to the origin characters because the custom character can choose a race, background, and class and subclass that the origin characters can't, so if no origin characters are say a Tabaxi (if its in by launch) Beastmaster Ranger with Acolyte background you will have a very unique experience from the Origin characters. Plus the custom origin mention free destiny so that might be a unique plot point for custom origin characters. Plus maybe they will make them better at using the tadpole then none custome characters.

I fully expect the differences herein for reactivity to be extremely minimal/superficial, which is exactly how I found them in the D:OS games.

Will all Origin Characters be able to join your party, and will all potential party members be origin characters?

If DOS2 is any indication, yes, all Origin character should be open to join (max of three, of course, not including the main character). Additionally, there should be an option to have non-Origin characters join (as it was in DOS2). Again, only going by DOS2.
Should certain Origin characters object to other Origin characters and refuse to join? That would be a cool dynamic (or make them hostile to each other if they were in the same party).

Voice acting is necessary for any sort of decent cRPG, text-based dialog should be relegated to history.
You should be hanged for this heresy.
