He was speaking in general terms. As is almost always the case when describing the opinion of a group of hundreds of people.

He said there were people who didn't know Baldur's Gate, not 'the' people. In any case, these statements do not conflict; it is entirely possible to love something now that you did not know about more than a year ago.
