I mean I guess...

Have you thought about what it would add to the game though?

First, I have to say that in a world with multiple gods, most people "believe" in them all. They are all real in this world. Some might even have favorite god(s), but overall it changes nothing for most classes.
For the classes that have to choose a deity, it is because they devote everything to that god. And the get something out of it mechanic wise also.
Your warlock might think he is devoted to sune, but if he was, he would not just be a warlock (rules wise). The god doesn't grant him anything in return, so there its a one way street.
So it comes down to roleplay. And I can respect that. But you can roleplay that he follows Sune (pretend) as you play.

For deity selection to have any effect on gameplay, it would add a tag. A tag would then be used in dialogue to give you extra options or could be used in other events.
There are a lot of gods.
I am not saying they couldn't add it to the game, but its a rather big project to add to have any interest for all the options.

Well it has been done before in temple of elemental evil and in neverwinter nights 2 here is a link to all the deities we can pick in neverwinter nights 2 https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net...n2.png/revision/latest?cb=20080412232829

I am well aware.

I started out what you thought it would add to the game though. (Please answer this)

I am not against picking a deity at all, but it really makes no difference if there is no effect on gameplay.
