Twitter Message"In the wake of the protests over George Floyd's death, The Guerrilla Collective has postponed its showcase to support Black Lives Matter.
With the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man from Minnesota killed in an act of police brutality, profound conversations around racial equality and justice have been at the forefront of national conversation in the past few weeks. Protests and gatherings across the world have called for major systemic change and reform towards police brutality and racial equality over the last week. With these major conversations happening, several upcoming events in the games industry have postponed their events to let these conversations take the spotlight, including the Guerrilla Collective.
In the wake of the nationwide protests, the Guerrilla Collective has announced that it will be postponing its upcoming digital showcase in support of Black Lives Matter. Originally scheduled to begin this weekend (June 6 – 8), the event organizers provided a statement in regard to the event’s delay. Though the event is intended to show “the cumulative effort of incredibly diverse teams unified” and to bring “hope and positive content to the world,” the Guerrilla Collective stated that “we recognize this is a time for action and for voices speaking out for justice and change to be heard.”
The event instead will be taking place a week later, from June 13-15, to highlight upcoming indie games and an assortment of projects from developers and publishers around the world. In addition, the organizers of the event also announced that in place of having its original event this weekend, on June 7 there will be a livestream to highlight black voices and members of the games industry, along with showcasing games made by black developers, featuring black protagonists, and engaging in conversations with black game developers.
Several other events that were originally planned for this weekend, such as The PC Gaming Show and The Future Games Show, and Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal event, had similarly postponed their upcoming events in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and protests. In this case, these publishers all made the right decision in order to let important conversations unfold, and for an opportunity for change and hope to take the forefront"
