Larian has not confirmed a DM feature yet... IF (when) they decide to do this. They could implement a relatively simple and really fun way to convert your homebrew paper maps to be ready to import into BG3's Engine. Prior to release of the DM mode, users could upload and digitally trace using Larian's web tool. Users would be able to assign pre-defined attributes to the traced lines i.e. dungeon wall. Later on, Larian's tool can easily import a good portion of data from the flat map file previously created on the website. Theoretically the tool could also be used to make a map from scratch on the site.

There are plenty of open source code options for projects like this so they wouldn't need to take forever to develop this. I helped make a simple tool for architecture drafting that does something similar and it took us (3 people) less than a week for near perfect results.

Please allow players to:

- Design and share maps before BG3 release.
- Make, save, and print custom D&D maps using a simple website tool
- Import custom maps from website tool into BG3
- Upload and trace existing paper maps.
- Website tool can use simple line art and BG3 import tool can ask specific questions about wall type upon import.
- Allow team collaboration and share feature
- Free website map maker tool would advertise your game to lots of people if the print feature works.

I'm sure many players will want to import their paper maps or at least make a digital copy, this would give them a headstart on building their world in BG3 before the actual mode gets implemented, assuming of course that they are planning to implement a DM mode and world-building. OMG the possibilities... content updates containing new assets could be glorious!

Lastly Larian can observe player maps and gain useful insight and fun ideas for use in their future assets. It's a win-win!

I can't imagine such a feature will be added, because translating a 2-D paper image into a 3D map seems like it would produce at best, something which needs to be rebuilt by hand anyway. There is absolutely nothing, whatsoever, "simple" about it.

True...however implementing a topographical map rendering tool...now that would save time in creating a basic landscape...to be later skinned of course.

A city map (overhead view) could also be great to make a basic street and foundation start...also to be skinned and buildings to be constructed on the foundations.

How many similar tools exist and how do the end results look like?

We do this all the time with open source drafting software, floor plans get converted to 3D models with ease, that's literally my clientele. I guess not many other people use that type of software so, it probably sounds more daunting than it really is.

I suggest that as you trace a line, you would have options for object type (like a wall), height, thickness, etc and just store that in the file data until later when it's time to import. This could also allow you to clean up your paper maps replacing pencil marks with clean vector image lines.
