I'd like to know, what are some of your favourite oddball, unusual and quirky companions in RPGS or any games?

Yes all the stuff outside of combat in a cRPG is what makes the game interesting and enjoyable to me. Therefore, to get the max enjoyment from those other elements, I am quite fine with playing the game on a lower difficulty level if that's what it takes. The "challenge" of combat is definitely NOT what I care for in my games. I play videogames to relax and destress, and overly challenging combat actually goes against what I'm looking for in a videogame.

Speaking of animal companions, in P:Km, I usually play a character with some levels of a class that gives me an animal companion. I do the same with Amiri, and Ekun comes with his dog. So across the three of us, we end up with three animal companions. Awesome!

As for quirky companions in other games, my memory fails me in remembering character names. I know I always liked having Jan Jansen in my BG parties. The druid in PoE is hilarious. Bioware always did a pretty decent job of having some interesting characters in their games, and I recall finding at least one great companion in each of the DA games (but again can't quite recall names). But also, sadly, I think recent cRPGs have shied away from including quirky companions in them.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I found your comment really insightful and you had some great stories.

One thing I do want to touch on is your comment that ''recent cRPGs have shied away from including quirky companions in them'' which is 100% accurate. It is a shame really because they make some of the most memorable characters!

It would be cool if you have a decent animal companion, but if they are going to use the beastmaster of 5e I think that´s going to be less than optimal he he.

I've never played NWN2, could you talk a bit more about Okku?

Oh, He´s cool. He´s a rainbow-colored giant bear with a penchant for introspection and a temper. You have a rocky relationship at the start with him because he´s an spirit protector and you have a spirit devoured inside of you. And you tried to kill each other... oh well, It´s a miracle that you travel together.

I fully recommend that you play NWN2: Mask of the betrayer. Great story, memorable companions.

He sounds awesome! Thanks so much for the vivid descriptions, from what I hear he is a must have.

I'll look into buying NWN2 for sure. You've sold me on it.

As I've said before, NwN2 is the best D&D videogame after the BG games.

I must of missed that. Great accolades for NwN2! I'm looking forward to playing it soon.

You were onto something with this comment. I remember seeing something about an Owlbear in BG3. I'll post it here if I can find it.

...I have done so already on this thread:-). Check previous page.

EDIT: Timing on the video much have changed (most likely they erased the time before stream started) so here is the correct bit in the video.

I do remember you originally posting and linking the video, thanks for linking it again smile. I meant before that I had seen a picture of an owlbear doing the rounds. I'm still trying to find it haha. I think we can agree that having the owlbear is a cool feature and we need more things like that in RPG games.

Oh! Didn't see it/or didn't notice that one.

To be clear the owlbear I mentioned can be a camp follower - I don't think those will join in combat. Maybe one can tame/summon a wild animal? I don't know what 5e rules and spells are.

Any character can try to use "animal handling" skill, but if that allows you to tame a beast it depends on the situation (and the DM). Usually is very difficult and train an animal takes a lot of time, you cannot magically make wolf you met your friend, but maybe you can tame a horse that is a domestic animal. They also can refuse to follow your orders if they´re against their nature or if they do not feel like doing it (that happens a lot with felines. /joke) There are no clear rules for it in the manual, to be honest.(As usual, they give "guidelines")

Spells like "speak with plants/animals/etc allows you to communicate with intelligent creatures and you can try to convince or coerce them to help you

There are spells that allow you to charm/dominate beasts and monsters, but they have a limited duration.
There are a few exceptions, like the druid spell "Awaken": when the spell expires, the creature can choose to join you, but only if it wants to. It has to be willingly.

There´s also summoning spells for everything, from find familiar to summon beasts, feys, undead, demons, elementals, etc. In 5e they´re very useful, since they last for an hour (but they´re concentration spells).

Yes please! See this is what we need in the game, Lord Raven, a Weeping Walrus and the Talkative Tiger!

Not to mention a big furry bear.

It looks to me like a screenshot from the conversation I pasted earlier. Perhaps failed save or something.

I loved all the party members in Mask of the Betrayer. Gannayev was my favorite.

In a direct comparison with Wilson the Bear how cool would Gannayev be?

I'm just messing with you haha.
