I truly consider controller RPG gaming the next step in the rising median age of gamers - I'm 40 and I'm so much happier on my couch killing Illithids TBH.
I'm 52. I still haven't warmed to controllers after 40-odd years! Which is odd because my typing is still lousy too.
I'm older still, but haven't got the hang of controllers either. In my case its mostly to do with me being something of a giant, and the damn controllers being so small they are close to impossible for me to use. I had the same problem with mice for a long time, but nowadays there's size and weight variation in mice, and laser mice are *so* much more controllable than older technologies.
