That has been remarked about before; and I can see the point (albeit not the "SJW" angle). ISTR (though I don't have the exact quote to hand) the explanation is that a number of different approaches were tried out precisely because they didn't want it to look too DOS-2-like, but that the art direction gravitated towards the same conclusion simply because it worked and the others didn't. I guess it was a choice between difference for its own sake or the risk it may be seen as more of the same.
Of course it was worded much more eloquently (and I dare say concisely) than my re-telling.
