Speaking only for myself, perceived attitude makes a big difference and it takes a lot more willpower to consider a point of view made contemptuously than one made courteously: it's just human nature. On any medium, if you see the same person or the same phrases cropping up in a derogatory context your eyes just end up glassing over.
